I had had rather mixed feelings towards the book while reading it kind of a love-hate relationship , and this film actually made me like the entire story much better.

I liked it so much that only a couple weeks later I ordered the version, and just finished watching it last night. Wow, what a difference!

Although the one has the advantage of some higher quality filming and an extra hour of screen time more is usually better in my mind when it comes to my literature-based time period films , I found the newer to be considerably inferior to this one!

This version has a MUCH better cast all around. I don't think you can beat this actress's rendition of Tess; I knew she was good in it, but couldn't fully appreciate HOW good until I saw the other version.

My heart goes out to her, whereas Tess actually got on my nerves. The difference in both roles is astounding. I even thought the smaller parts, like Tess's parents and the other milkmaids, were better done in this one.

The only exception I make, is that I did think the Alec D'Urberville more like how I pictured him when I read the book; Alec does a fine job, is more subtle in his portrayal, but simply does not match so much what I thought he would look and sound like.

Although there is an hour less in this film than the other, I still felt like this one is more generally accurate.

I am much more tolerant of deletions from book to film of course they can't fit everything in than I am about alterations.

There was more material in the version, but they took more liberties, which simply annoys me. This version, while it couldn't have every detail, what was there was very accurate for the most part.

And it captures the story in its entirety quite well for its time constraints. If you're a Jane Austen fan as I am , understand that this is NOT a Jane Austen story, which tend to be like fairy tales with happy endings; there are "bad guys" in her books, but they are not a real hindrance to the real heroines.

This is a grittier story, not set in the posh genteel society of the gentry and nobility; lots of low people, lots of hard labor, lots of reality.

And there are the "bad guys", and then those characters which tread the line between "good" and "bad". It's definitely more complex, definitely more drama, but very worthwhile if you're up to it and know what you're getting into.

If it is your first experience with this story, don't expect your viewing to be a relaxing ride.

There is plenty to make you furious, happy, sad When I first read this book, it was something of an emotional roller coaster I'd absolutely adore one character, only to hate them intensely a few chapters later, and so on , but now that I'm more familiar with the story, I can appreciate it better.

It sinks under your skin and makes you keep thinking about it. This movie leaves you like that, too. It's an excellent rendition of an excellent book.

Justine Waddell is perfect as the tragic Tess, she brings Tess to life unlike the actress in the more recent BBC version.

The soundtrack is haunting and will stay with you, as well as the beautifully filmed scenery. Never heard the name of Justine Waddell until viewing this masterpiece.

Is there anyone her equal? She is the priceless gem on the crown of British film history. Period dramas based on literary classics are now the only genre of movies I allow myself the sacrifice of time and treasure.

Justine's portrayal of Tess is mesmerizing, unforgettable. She has managed to draw out of me the purest emotions from a man unaccustomed to untarnished romantic sentiments.

May every man be blessed to love their own Tess. Wonderful actors perfect for their roles; cinematography is well crafted. How rough it was to be poor in those times.

Women were quite vulnerable. Tess was both vulnerable, and determined. She was fragile, but strong. Circumstances were stacked against her it seems.

Life was hard, very hard. Justine Waddell gave a masterful portayal of Tess, and is so naturally and achingly beautiful as Natalie Wood was in some of her movies.

The sound track carried every scene well. Well worth one's time to watch. I'd call this one a masterpiece. One person found this helpful.

The adaptation itself is excellent, with a fine cast, and plenty of time given to develop the story. Waddell's Tess is more a living, breathing human being than the almost mythic character Polanski makes of Kinski, and being familiar with the book for a great many years, the book begs for both interpretations.

I should warn you, however, that Tess's fate hits harder in this version than it does in Polanski's, precisely of Waddell's portrayal.

This three part film, was well acted, and the filming captured the English landscape and culture of the time really well.

I really enjoyed watching this. It portrays well the ways in which fate and luck can shift very quickly. It seems like most of this film really expressed that life is uncertain.

I had never read the book, so I cannot compare. But, I am really glad to have come across this film.

This is a true tragic tale with lots of human fallibility all around. All she wanted to be was a teacher, but oh no - wasn't gonna happen!

This movie was really great I enjoyed it. Since I've been retired, I've been buying many of these Victorian era movies because I like to watch them in the winter time when I can't get out in the garden.

Top reviews from other countries. Her part in this series was enchanting, and I wanted to see what other films Justine had starred in. The introduction scene is very romantic, with a group of beautifully dressed girls partaking in a May Day dance in beautiful countryside.

The background music really adds to the atmosphere of the film. Justine's acting is superb, it is very natural, unlike the acting and directing in the more recent film adaption of the same novel, which appears scripted and robotic.

Her acting in the romantic scenes is very convincing, as well as in the sad parts of the film, making you feel you are experiencing her hopes and fears along with her.

Having never read the book, I was not prepared for the tragic aspect of this film. Alec, who seems to have replaced any religious fervour he once had with a passion for Tess alone, continues to plague her with his relentless attention.

Having never read the book, I was not prepared for the tragic aspect of this film. I was expecting a happy ending which did not come.

I was also not expecting her relationships with Angel and Mr. Durberville to turn out as badly as they did. Had I known this before watching the film, I might have enjoyed it better the first time.

Watching it the second time, I can anticipate what is going to happen, which makes the film feel a little less disjointed and more enjoyable.

Though I still prefer to fast-forward past the sad parts and just watch the happy parts! When I first watched the scene when Tess arrives at Mr.

Durberville's house, I felt the directing was a little disjointed or unexpected. Suddenly we are confronted with a large empty house and a strange man about whom we know nothing.

I feel the film seems to make jumps like this, from one part of Tess' life to another without giving much warning, though I am not sure whether bad directing is to blame for that or whether that is the fault of the original book.

I presume it is the fault of the book. Justine portrays Tess's innocence and naivety very well, and the acting of the other characters in the film is also excellent.

It is well worth watching, though be prepared for some serious plot twists if you haven't read the book. This film would be perfect if you took out all the bad bits and gave it a happy ending!

Though I understand that is not possible. You will notice my capitals in my review title. The reason being that I wish to warn those who have not seen it that this is what it is and I feel dismayed at those who gave it a low rating because it is depressing.

It is an adaptation of one of Hardy's tragic novels and by definition does not have a happy ending! If you want a period drama that ends happily then stick to Jane Austen.

On with the review. This is the first Tess adaptation that I watched way back in my first year at uni and compelled me to read the book.

The story is about a poor family who originally descend from the noble D'urberville line who attempt to reclaim their title by sending their eldest daughter Tess to claim kin.

Tess meets not Mrs D'urberville but her son Alec. He takes a fancy to her and she starts work on the estate shortly after their meeting.

A truamatic event follows for Tess and she returns to her home in an attempt to forget him. Tess has the worst luck in the world and after a couple of years moves to work on a farm to escape her past.

She falls deeply in love with a man called Angel Clare and is happy for a while. Does Tess confess her past to Angel? Does he overlook her past?

Do they end up happily ever after? Watch it and find out. The 3 main actors are suitably cast for their roles.

Jason Fleming is sleazy as the manipulative Alec though not quite as handsome as Alec should be in my opinion, Oliver Milburn is also very good in his potrayal as Angel.

Justine delivers the naive and vulnerable nature of Tess quite convincingly. If you have read the book before, then you will notice some changes within the adaptation though not necessarily "bad" ones.

You may not wish to use this particular one if you're revising for A level Literature as it is not comparable scene by scene to the book. I have a strong attachment to this particular adaptation since it was this one that acquainted me with Tess in the first place which has become one of my favourite books of all time.

Liked everything about this version of Tess. It's the best version I've watched so far, and I've seen a few. Great story of course, acting and production.

Quite sumptuous. I'd recommend it. This movie is excellent! I enjoyed watching it! The acting was so natural, perfect I expected too much from Kinski that I must admit I was so very disappointed!

BBC's Tess has a too strong personality, too self confident since the beginning that annoys a bit Alec was not the right choice from my point of view.

Justine Waddell makes of Tess a believable pure, feminine, delicate, still strong girl-woman. Alec and Angel are also beautifully played.

You happen to see both sides of the men and you are confronted with complex personalities. I highly recommend this version of TESS!

I have seen various formats of Tess of the D'Ubervilles mainly in film form. I found this adaptation to be lightweight and in comparison to those seen previously this for me was for too lightweight, it seemed as if hourly episodes had been slotted together and was overly long, I would not recommend this film and was disappointed in the content.

This is competently made for a TV mini-series. Arterton has the alluring beauty and the defiant sadness.

There may be other colors that she fails to fill in the eyes of some Thomas Hardy fans but she's perfectly good to me. Redmayne has a fragile goodness nature which is very helpful.

This is a female suffering melodrama along the Lifetime mode but with more costumes, more British, and more depth. This is a four-part mini-series.

The fourth part does struggle to wrap everything up. The melodrama climax gets a bit cringy. It may not satisfy everybody but it has enough worthwhile.
